5 thoroughly thoughtful gifts that all new parents will love

There’s nothing quite like the arrival of a baby to make you realise just how generous your friends and family are. After the birth of a new babe, its parents are literally inundated with thoughtful gifts for their little cherub. From hats, baby grows and muslins, to teddies, toys and blankets, newborns today have never been luckier.

But as a first time parent myself, I know from first-hand experience that, while every present is wholly unexpected and extremely generous, the gifts which really stand out from the crowd are those bought especially for the new parents themselves.

Presents that say to these struggling new mums and dads:

“I know what you are going through. For the next few weeks, you will be more exhausted, exhilarated, confused and time-poor than you’re ever been before. Nothing can truly prepare you for what lies ahead. You may struggle to breastfeed. At times, you may well be too busy or tired to eat, clean or shower, let alone get out of your pyjamas! But you are not alone. You can do this! And hopefully this little present will give you a little boost along the way.”

So, for anyone in the market for thoughtful gifts to buy new parents, I’ve handpicked five of my favourites (for a range of different budgets) that are guaranteed to go down a treat!

Thoughtful gifts for new parents

My top 5 thoughtful gifts for new parents

  1. Urban Massage– a very spoiling post-partum treat for new parents

Although being a new parent can be an incredible, life-affirming and hugely rewarding experience, the first few weeks can also be immensely stressful, not to mention exhausting. So what better way to show new parents that you care than by treating them to a special couples massage in their own living room?

Urban Massage does just that. Through their website and easy to use App, you can arrange for a qualified (and customer rated) massage therapist to provide a wide range of different massage treatments from the comfort of their own home. Just pick a date and time, choose an expert therapist and they’ll turn up at your friends’ house with a portable massage table and all the oils they’ll need for a sumptuous post-baby massage.

What’s more, there a wide range of specialist treatments to choose from. Everything from Pregnancy and Sports massage to Reflexology and their specially named Urban Classic – a take on the famous Swedish massage with a combination of stroking, kneading, light pressure and flowing movements over your whole body.

My wife and I were lucky enough to receive an hour long treatment each from Urban Massage just five days after our baby was born. And let me tell you, it was one of the most amazing nights of our lives. Exactly what we needed to recharge our batteries and unwind after the intensity of labour.

At-home treatments start from £65 for a 60 minute massage (or £130 for two therapists – one for mum and one for dad!) and I can confirm that it is worth every penny. Special shout out to Urban Massage London therapist Carmen C – an absolute superstar – who gave my wife an incredible pregnancy massage; the ideal treatment for post-partum new mums.

As thoughtful gifts go, they don’t get much better than this!

Gift vouchers from Urban Massage can be purchased here. Or, if you’re tempted to book one for yourself, you can get £20 off your first treatment by using my exclusive link: https://www.urbanmassage.com/invite/RGILBEPB

  1.  COOK – food, glorious food (for new parents’ freezers)

The quickest way to new parents’ hearts is undoubtedly through their stomachs! As silly as it sounds, during the first few weeks of pregnancy, finding time to go food shopping, cook and eat can often feel like a huge hill to climb. So anything that can be done to ease this burden will go down a treat.

From personal experience, one of the most thoughtful gifts that we received during parental leave, was the gift of a readymade meal, to keep our energy and spirits up during the long days and nights of new parenthood.

You can’t go wrong with the amazing selection available from COOK, a British premium frozen food retailer and producer, who make remarkable meals for your freezer, prepared by hand, using the same ingredients and techniques you would use at home.

There are COOK shops all across the UK (find your nearest COOK shop here), where you can hand pick a special supper for two (or more), including starters, delicious main courses, special sides and indulgent puddings. Or alternatively, you can easily order a load of yummy meals online for home delivery, to stock new parents’ freezers for the long weeks ahead.

COOK - Thoughtful gifts for new parents

Everything I’ve tasted so far from COOK is seriously top notch, but some of my favourites include their Steak and Red Wine Pie (£8.50 for a generous two person serving) and their Classic Paella (£8), which are both properly delicious. And for something sweeter, their Salted Caramel, Chocolate & Honeycomb Cheesecake (£3.50) is to die for.

Thoughtful gifts just got a whole lot tastier!

What’s more, a friend from NCT reliably informed me that new mums and dads can now get 10% off the entire COOK range for six months! This offer can start either during the pregnancy, at birth, or indeed at any time in the first six months of parenthood – all you need to do is register online to qualify. A seriously awesome initiative!

  1.  I hate ironing – executive dry cleaning service for busy parents

Looking after a new baby is tiring work. And that’s before you even factor in any household chores like cleaning, washing and ironing. Babies get through multiple outfit changes a day. And if your baby is anything like mine, prone to explosive poos and random bouts of vomiting, new parents are sure to need a regular supply of clean clothes too (that aren’t permanently milk or poo stained).

By far the most stressful time for new parents is the day or two before the new mum or dad returns to work after the statutory two weeks of parental leave. Cue frantic laundry and ironing sessions to prepare shirts, suits and uniforms for the weeks of work ahead. Not what you need when you already have a pile (up to the ceiling) of other baby-related laundry to iron and fold.

So why not give new parents the gift of time by sorting all their most time-consuming laundry tasks for them? During my own paternity leave, I was lucky enough to receive a £50 voucher from ihateironing, to try out their executive dry cleaning service before my return to work. And OMG, it was an absolute God send!

ihateironing - thoughtful gifts

You see, ihateironing is a network of the very best dry cleaners across London, Oxford, Cambridge or Brighton, which collects your dirty laundry from your home before returning it to your door, washed and pressed, less than 24 hours later. Their flexible collection and delivery slots mean you don’t have to deal with restrictive opening times and can place an order online, 24/7 .

For my £50, I managed to get my work suit dry cleaned, 12 shirts washed and ironed, as well as a load of other items, like my waistcoat for an upcoming wedding and even some of my wife’s maternity dresses. All returned in record time by their ever so friendly delivery team. I can’t tell you how incredible it was to have that stress taken away from me before returning to work the following week.

You can purchase gift vouchers from ihateironing here! What’s more, you can get £10 off your first order by using my exclusive discount code gilej3e at check out!

  1.  The Fourth Trimester magazine – supporting new parents with life after birth

One of the scariest things about new parenthood is the fear that you are doing it all wrong. The confusion you face when every book and parenting website gives you wildly different advice. And the fear that any mistake or shortcut you take will spell disaster for your baby’s future. So any gift that can support new parents through this challenging new life stage, while reassuring them that they are not alone, has to be a winner.

One of my favourite thoughtful gifts (that I myself have given to a few new parent friends) is the incredible real life parenting magazine The Fourth Trimester, which focuses on supporting life after birth.

The Fourth Trimester - Thoughtful gifts for new parents

Offering uncensored, friendly advice from people who have been through or are going through this crazy journey of parenthood, all articles are written by actual parents. Real life human mums and dads who want to share their stories to help other real life mums and dads feel better during their fourth trimester. The magazine itself is real, honest and gritty, promising to never shy away from the nasty aspects of life with a new baby. It’s seriously cool, and one of the most thoughtful gifts around.

You can order the latest edition of The Fourth Trimester magazine here for just £3, which, I must say, is a total bargain! Plus, their next edition is due out soon, and will include the first edition of The Fourth Tri-MAN magazine, a special supplement written especially by dads, for dads!

You can keep up to date with preparations for their next issue on Instagram at @fourthtrimag and @fourthtriman.

  1.  OH ME OH MAMA – seriously thoughtful gift boxes for new mamas

The aptly named fourth trimester can be an especially anxious and mentally exhausting time for new parents, as the sudden shift in responsibilities and a weird, unquenchable tiredness takes over.

All prospective parents are pre-warned that in the first week of life with a baby, new mums are almost certain to suffer from the dreaded Baby Blues; a period of inconsolable crying and heightened emotions as their post-partum hormones run amok. Unfortunately, more severe Post Natal Depression is also increasingly common among new mums (and also new dads) these days.

And one of the largest contributors to this can be when a new baby doesn’t take to breastfeeding, which can be a major blow to new mums’ confidence during the early days of parenthood. Take it from me, it’s not as easy as it looks and requires a huge amount of patience and perseverance to stick with it.

With this in mind, my final choice in this list of thoughtful gifts for new parents is the awesome Big Mama Gift Box from Oh Me Oh Mama, which provides new mums with everything they might need to support them in their breastfeeding efforts. A seriously thoughtful choice, which I recently discovered on Instagram!
